Attornment

I recently signed a commercial lease for some space. Never having done that before, I decided to read the entire document. I was puzzled by the word "Attornment". My landlord graciously had his secretary look it up, and it means that I agree to be a tenant to the new landlord, should the property be sold. Three years in Law School, and I never heard of it.
